Has the Arab Spring arrived in Israel? - Inside Story

More than 100,000 people took to the streets of 11 cities in Israel on Saturday to protest against the spiralling cost of living in the country.

Protesters at the largest gatherings, in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Be'er Sheva and Haifa, chanted "the people demand social justice" and "we want justice, not charity".

The biggest protest was in Tel Aviv, where tens of thousands marched from HaBima Square to the Tel Aviv Museum.

On this episode of Inside Story, we ask: Has the Arab Spring reached Israel? What are its root causes? Is it likely to affect Binyamin Netanyahu's grip on power? What impact will it have on Arab-Israelis?

Inside Story discusses Israel's rising class divide with guests: Mark Regev, the spokesperson for Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister; Roee Ruttenberg, a contributor to online news website 972 Mag; and Libby Lenkinski, the director of international relations at the Association of Civil Rights in Israel.

This episode of Inside Story aired on Sunday, July 31, 2011.
